Orla O’Connor joined EY as a graduate and is now a Senior Manager with our Insurance audit team – read her story, and click through to browse our current job opportunities.

I have been in EY just over 11 years, having joined as a graduate in 2019 straight from college. I have spent most of this time in our assurance insurance group.

My role as Senior Manager in the Financial Services Assurance team is quite demanding. I am focused on insurance clients which is a highly regulated industry. I deeply enjoy working with different client stakeholders and with the different EY teams. Every day I learn not only from partners and directors but also from working with team members at all levels.

What I enjoy most about working in the insurance group at EY Financial Services is the people.  You get the opportunity to build strong networks, both personally and professionally. You work with such a diverse range of people, whether that be clients or EY teams from across the global network, and you build strong relationships along the way.

With EY being a globally integrated firm, there are also plenty of opportunities to grow and to learn. I decided I wanted to take my career to a different level and was presented with the opportunity to get involved with the EY EMEIA FSO Brexit team, which I joined in 2017 for a three year period. This was a cross country, cross sector, cross service-line project team established to help clients with their Brexit solutions. It was a great opportunity that gave me access to very senior executives both internally within EY and with clients.

I have also benefited from the firm’s approach to flexible working, which has allowed me to work on really interesting projects while raising my family. I have had my two girls whilst working in EY and the support I have received has been amazing, allowing me to work where and when it suits.

I’ve seen enormous change in the eleven years I’ve been with the firm. The profession is changing and the skills required are changing, too. Our insurance practice is growing significantly meaning it is an exciting time to be part of a team that’s experiencing such rapid growth and development.
